I really don’t know if it is just me these days, but I worry a lot about what is going to happen when the older generation pass on. They are the last kind of people who still appreciate manners/respect and when they are all gone I honestly really get scared about what it will be like.
The other day I was coming out of a charity shop, and an old man with a cane was at the door to leave before me. He saw me behind him, and then went to great effort to step aside, come around to my side (can and all) so he could hold the door open for me. I smiled at him nicely and said ‘thankyou really very much’ The saddest thing is he looked shocked that I had thanked him. I am very much capable of opening doors etc. myself of course, but I still appreciate it greatly if a kind person (male or female) holds it open for me.
To ruin my temporary feeling that some goodness in the world still existed, I went to the petrol station afterwards - there is the heaviest door to that place, I am so small it takes quite a lot of effort to open it. If I have opened it and someone else is coming in/out I hold it for them. I went to go in behind this giant guy and he promptly let it just slam nearly in my face. Ass.
Am I the only one who is really, really panicked about ‘the state of the world today’? It keeps me up at night.
